About:
- Date of birth unknown (1870’s?).
- Probably born in the Eastern Cape, possibly in Kingwilliamstown.
His father possibly came from Scotland with his family in the (late? 1840’s and settled in the Eastern Cape. He was a steeplejack, and as the story goes, died when he fell off a steeple of a church he was building in Kingwilliamstown (Grahamstown?)
- When he came to Johannesburg, he met my grandmother, Martha
Muller, who was working as a barlady in a Johannesburg hotel.
- Date of death unknown – buried in Johannesburg. He must have
been relatively old, because he died before my mother met my
father (before 1937). Cause of death unknown.
Parents: Unknown
- I believe they came from Scotland, possibly Skye. When we visited Skye,
We found a several graves in the north-east, bearing the surname “Swan” and also with the Christian names given to my grandfather, my father and his two brothers.

- My parents told me that he was the last in the line of males in his direct
family. A sister/sisters were never mentioned.
